Community Guidelines

Read the Opengates community guidelines to understand what's allowed and what's not on the platform. Learn about professional conduct, prohibited content, consequences of violations, and the appeals process.

The Opengates community guidelines exist to create a safe, professional, and inclusive environment for everyone — freelancers, clients, and visitors alike. By joining Opengates, you agree to follow these guidelines in all your interactions on the platform, including your profile, posts, messages, reviews, and any other content you create or share.

These guidelines are not meant to be overly restrictive. They're designed to protect everyone's right to a positive experience while allowing the marketplace to thrive. We believe that clear expectations lead to better interactions, stronger trust, and more successful working relationships.

Core Principles

All community members are expected to uphold these core principles:

Professionalism

Opengates is a professional marketplace. Treat every interaction as you would in a professional business setting. This means:

  • Communicating respectfully and courteously, even when you disagree.
  • Delivering work that meets the agreed-upon standards and deadlines.
  • Being honest and transparent about your skills, experience, and availability.
  • Honoring your commitments and contracts.

Honesty

Trust is the foundation of any marketplace. Be truthful in all your dealings:

  • Don't misrepresent your qualifications, portfolio, or work experience.
  • Don't use fake reviews or manipulate your ratings.
  • Don't create multiple accounts to circumvent platform policies.
  • Be upfront about pricing, timelines, and any potential issues with a project.

Respect

Every person on Opengates deserves to be treated with dignity and respect:

  • Don't discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, or any other characteristic.
  • Don't use offensive, threatening, or demeaning language.
  • Respect cultural differences and be mindful that you're interacting with people from all around the world.

Safety

Help keep the community safe for everyone:

  • Don't engage in or promote illegal activities.
  • Don't attempt to scam, defraud, or deceive other users.
  • Report any behavior or content that makes you feel unsafe or that you believe violates these guidelines.

Opengates welcomes a wide range of professional activities and content. Here are examples of what's appropriate:

  • Creating a professional profile with accurate information about your skills, experience, and portfolio.
  • Posting legitimate job listings with clear descriptions, fair budgets, and realistic expectations.
  • Offering professional services in any legal field, from software development and design to writing, marketing, consulting, and more.
  • Communicating about projects through the platform's messaging system, including discussing requirements, providing feedback, and coordinating work.
  • Sharing constructive reviews based on your genuine experience working with someone.
  • Promoting your services through your profile, portfolio, and appropriate platform features.

What's Not Allowed

The following behaviors and content are strictly prohibited on Opengates:

Fraud and Scams

  • Creating fake profiles or impersonating other people or organizations.
  • Posting fake job listings designed to collect personal information or payments.
  • Requesting or making payments outside of the Opengates platform to circumvent payment protections.
  • Pyramid schemes, multi-level marketing promotions, or "get rich quick" schemes.
  • Phishing attempts or sending links designed to steal login credentials or personal information.

Harassment and Abuse

  • Threatening, intimidating, or bullying other users.
  • Sending unsolicited explicit, sexual, or romantic messages.
  • Repeatedly contacting someone who has asked you to stop or who has blocked you (by creating new accounts or using other means).
  • Doxxing — sharing someone's personal information (address, phone number, real name, etc.) without their consent.
  • Hate speech — content that attacks individuals or groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics.

Prohibited Content

  • Sexually explicit content, pornography, or content involving minors.
  • Content promoting violence, terrorism, or self-harm.
  • Content that infringes on intellectual property rights (copyright, trademark, etc.).
  • Malware, viruses, or any content designed to harm devices or systems.
  • Spam — repetitive, irrelevant, or unsolicited messages or content.

Platform Manipulation

  • Creating multiple accounts to artificially inflate your presence or circumvent suspensions.
  • Using bots or automated tools to interact with the platform in unauthorized ways.
  • Manipulating reviews, ratings, or search rankings through fake activity.
  • Circumventing platform fees by arranging off-platform payments.
  • Attempting to exploit bugs or vulnerabilities in the platform instead of reporting them.

Illegal Activities

  • Offering or soliciting services for illegal purposes.
  • Money laundering or facilitating financial crimes.
  • Selling or distributing illegal goods or substances.
  • Violating applicable laws and regulations in your jurisdiction.

Consequences of Violations

When we identify a violation of our community guidelines, we take action that's proportional to the severity of the offense. Consequences may include:

Warning

For minor or first-time violations, we may issue a warning explaining what guideline was violated and how to avoid future violations. Warnings are recorded on your account.

Content Removal

Content that violates our guidelines will be removed from the platform. This includes posts, messages, reviews, profile content, or any other user-generated content. You'll be notified when content is removed and told which guideline it violated.

Temporary Suspension

For more serious violations or repeated minor violations, your account may be temporarily suspended. During a suspension:

  • You won't be able to log in or access the platform.
  • Your profile and content will not be visible to other users.
  • Active contracts will be paused, and affected parties will be notified.
  • The suspension period depends on the severity of the violation (typically 7-30 days).

Permanent Ban

The most severe violations — including fraud, serious harassment, illegal activities, and repeated violations after previous warnings or suspensions — may result in a permanent ban. A permanent ban means:

  • Your account is permanently deactivated.
  • You are prohibited from creating new accounts.
  • Any pending payments may be held or refunded as appropriate.
  • In some cases, we may report the violation to law enforcement.

Financial Consequences

In cases involving fraud or financial misconduct:

  • Pending earnings may be frozen or withheld.
  • Payments may be reversed or refunded to affected parties.
  • You may be required to reimburse the platform for any losses incurred due to your actions.

The Appeals Process

We understand that mistakes happen — both on our end and on yours. If you believe that an action taken against your account was unfair or based on a misunderstanding, you have the right to appeal.

How to Appeal

  1. Review the notification: When action is taken against your account, you'll receive a notification (via email and/or in-app) explaining what happened and which guideline was violated.
  2. Gather your information: Before filing an appeal, gather any evidence or context that supports your case. This might include screenshots, links, or a written explanation of the situation.
  3. Submit your appeal: Follow the instructions in the notification to submit your appeal. You'll typically need to provide:
    • Your account username or email.
    • A clear explanation of why you believe the action was incorrect.
    • Any supporting evidence.
  4. Wait for review: Our Trust & Safety team will review your appeal. This typically takes 5-10 business days, though complex cases may take longer.
  5. Receive the decision: You'll be notified of the appeal outcome. If your appeal is upheld, the action will be reversed and your account will be restored. If the appeal is denied, the original action will stand, and you'll be given an explanation.

Appeal Tips

  • Be honest and respectful in your appeal. Aggressive or abusive language will not help your case.
  • Provide specific details and evidence. Vague claims without supporting information are harder to evaluate.
  • Don't submit multiple appeals for the same issue — this slows down the process.
  • If new evidence becomes available after you've submitted your appeal, you can submit it as a follow-up.

Reporting Violations

If you witness someone violating these guidelines, please report it. You can report users, posts, messages, and other content directly through the platform. Your report will be reviewed by our Trust & Safety team, and appropriate action will be taken.

Reports are confidential — the person you report will not know who reported them. For details on how to report, see our Reporting Content guide.

Updates to These Guidelines

We may update these community guidelines from time to time to address new situations, improve clarity, or reflect changes in the platform. When significant changes are made, we'll notify users through the platform and/or via email. Continued use of Opengates after guideline updates constitutes acceptance of the updated guidelines.
