Trust & Safety
Learn how Opengates keeps the freelancing community safe through community guidelines, content moderation, user verification, and reporting tools.
At Opengates, we believe that a thriving freelancing marketplace starts with a safe and trustworthy community. Every freelancer, client, and user on the platform deserves to feel secure — whether they're browsing profiles, communicating about a project, making payments, or delivering work.
Our Trust & Safety program is built around four pillars: clear guidelines, proactive moderation, user verification, and easy-to-use reporting tools. Together, these create an environment where you can focus on doing great work and building meaningful professional relationships.
How Opengates Keeps You Safe
Community Guidelines
Our Community Guidelines set the standard for behavior on the platform. They outline what's allowed and what's not, covering everything from professional conduct and communication standards to prohibited content and activities. Every user agrees to these guidelines when they create an account, and violations can result in warnings, content removal, temporary suspensions, or permanent bans depending on the severity.
The guidelines aren't just a list of rules — they're a shared commitment to maintaining a professional, respectful, and inclusive community. We encourage every user to read and understand them.
Content Moderation
Opengates employs a combination of automated systems and human reviewers to monitor content on the platform. Our moderation efforts cover:
- User profiles: Ensuring profile information is accurate, professional, and free from prohibited content.
- Posts and listings: Reviewing job postings, service listings, and portfolio items for compliance with our guidelines.
- Messages: While we respect user privacy, our systems can detect patterns associated with spam, phishing, and abuse.
- Reviews and ratings: Monitoring for fake reviews, review manipulation, and retaliatory reviews.
Our goal is to catch and address problematic content quickly while minimizing the impact on legitimate users. We continuously improve our moderation tools and processes to stay ahead of bad actors.
User Verification
Trust is easier to build when you know the person you're working with is who they claim to be. Opengates offers Verification Badges that users can earn by completing identity and organization verification processes.
Verified users have proven their identity through government-issued ID verification and, in some cases, organization verification for businesses and agencies. Verification badges appear prominently on user profiles, giving other users confidence that they're dealing with a legitimate person or organization.
Reporting Tools
If you encounter something that doesn't seem right — whether it's a suspicious profile, an inappropriate message, a misleading job posting, or any other content that violates our guidelines — you can report it easily.
Our reporting system is designed to be simple and accessible:
- You can report users, posts, messages, and other content with just a few taps.
- Reports are reviewed by our Trust & Safety team promptly.
- You can report anonymously — the person you report will not know who filed the report.
- False or malicious reporting is taken seriously and may result in consequences for the reporter.
Your Role in Community Safety
While Opengates invests significantly in tools and teams to keep the platform safe, community safety is a shared responsibility. Here's how you can contribute:
Stay Informed
Read and understand our Community Guidelines. Knowing the rules helps you recognize violations when you see them and ensures your own behavior meets community standards.
Report Suspicious Activity
If something seems off, report it. Don't assume someone else will — your report could be the one that prevents a scam, stops harassment, or protects another user. Common things to report include:
- Users asking you to communicate or pay outside of Opengates.
- Profiles with stolen or fake photos.
- Messages containing threats, harassment, or explicit content.
- Job postings that seem too good to be true or ask for upfront payments.
- Users impersonating someone else.
Protect Your Account
Your account security is your first line of defense. Take these steps to protect yourself:
- Use a strong, unique password: Don't reuse passwords from other sites. Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Adding a second layer of security to your account makes it much harder for unauthorized users to access it.
- Don't share your login credentials: Never share your password, 2FA codes, or passkeys with anyone — not even Opengates support (we will never ask for these).
- Be cautious with links: Don't click on suspicious links in messages, emails, or other communications. They may lead to phishing sites designed to steal your credentials.
Keep Communication on the Platform
For your own protection, conduct all business communication through Opengates. This ensures:
- There's a record of all discussions and agreements in case of disputes.
- You're protected by Opengates' payment protection and escrow system.
- Our support team can review communications if you need help resolving an issue.
Users who try to move communication off-platform (to personal email, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.) may be attempting to bypass the platform's protections. This is a red flag.
Payment Safety
One of the biggest risks in online freelancing is payment fraud. Opengates provides several protections to keep your money safe:
- Escrow system: When a client funds a contract, the payment is held in escrow until the work is completed and approved. This protects freelancers from non-payment and clients from paying for undelivered work.
- Never pay outside the platform: If someone asks you to send money via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or any method outside of Opengates, it's almost certainly a scam. Always use the platform's built-in payment system.
- Dispute resolution: If there's a disagreement about a payment or deliverable, Opengates provides a formal dispute resolution process with a dedicated team to mediate.
What to Do If You Feel Unsafe
If you ever feel unsafe on Opengates — whether due to threats, harassment, stalking, or any other reason — here's what to do:
- Block the user immediately: This prevents them from contacting you further. You can block a user from their profile or from the conversation.
- Report the user or content: File a report through the platform's reporting tool. Provide as much detail as possible, including screenshots if available.
- Contact our support team: If the situation is urgent or you feel your physical safety is at risk, contact our support team directly. We prioritize reports involving threats and safety concerns.
- Document everything: Don't delete messages or evidence. Our support team may need to review the conversation to take appropriate action.
- If you're in immediate danger: Contact your local law enforcement. Opengates will cooperate fully with law enforcement requests related to user safety.
