Password Reset

Learn how to reset your Opengates password via email, create a strong password, change your password from settings, and troubleshoot common password reset issues.

Password Reset

Your password is the primary key to your Opengates account. Whether you've forgotten it, suspect it's been compromised, or simply want to update it as a security best practice, this guide will walk you through every step of the password reset and change process.

Opengates uses a secure email-based password reset system. This means that to reset your password, you'll need access to the email address associated with your account. We'll also cover what to do if you're not receiving the reset email and how to create a strong password that keeps your account safe.

Resetting Your Password (Forgot Password)

If you can't remember your password or are unable to log in, follow these steps to reset it.

  1. Go to the Opengates login page at opengates.app/login.
  2. Click the "Forgot Password?" link below the password field.
  3. On the password reset page, enter the email address associated with your Opengates account.
  4. Click "Send Reset Link".
  5. Check your email inbox for a message from Opengates with the subject line "Reset Your Opengates Password".
  6. Open the email and click the "Reset Password" button or link. This will take you to a secure page where you can create a new password.
  7. On the reset page, enter your new password and confirm it by typing it again.
  8. Click "Reset Password" or "Save New Password".
  9. You'll see a confirmation message that your password has been successfully changed.
  10. You can now log in with your new password.
  • The password reset link is valid for 60 minutes after it's sent. If the link expires, you'll need to request a new one.
  • The reset link can only be used once. After you've used it to change your password, the link becomes invalid.
  • For security, clicking the reset link will sign you out of all active sessions on other devices. This ensures that if someone else had access to your account, they'll be logged out immediately.
  • The reset link is unique to your account and cannot be used by anyone else, even if they intercept the email.

Changing Your Password from Settings

If you're already logged in and want to update your password (for example, as a regular security practice), you can do so from your account settings.

On the Web

  1. Log in to your Opengates account.
  2. Click your profile photo in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Navigate to Security or Password & Security.
  4. Click "Change Password".
  5. Enter your current password to verify your identity.
  6. Enter your new password.
  7. Confirm your new password by typing it again.
  8. Click "Update Password" or "Save".

On Mobile (iOS & Android)

  1. Open the Opengates app.
  2. Tap the profile iconSettings.
  3. Tap Security or Password.
  4. Tap "Change Password".
  5. Enter your current password.
  6. Enter and confirm your new password.
  7. Tap "Save" or "Update".

After changing your password, you may be asked to log in again on your current device. All other active sessions will remain active unless you choose to sign out of all devices (see Managing Sessions).

Creating a Strong Password

A strong password is your first defense against unauthorized access. Here's how to create one that's both secure and manageable.

Password Requirements on Opengates

Opengates enforces the following minimum requirements for all passwords:

  • Minimum length: 8 characters (we recommend 12 or more)
  • Must include: At least one uppercase letter (A–Z)
  • Must include: At least one lowercase letter (a–z)
  • Must include: At least one number (0–9)
  • Must include: At least one special character (e.g., !, @, #, $, %, &, *)
  • Cannot be: The same as your previous 5 passwords
  • Cannot contain: Your email address or display name

Tips for a Strong Password

  1. Make it long: The longer your password, the harder it is to crack. Aim for at least 12–16 characters.
  2. Use a passphrase: Instead of a random string of characters, consider using a passphrase — a series of unrelated words strung together. For example: BlueTiger$Running42Mountain! is both long and memorable.
  3. Avoid common patterns: Don't use passwords like Password123!, Qwerty2024, or 123456789. These are among the first passwords attackers try.
  4. Don't reuse passwords: Use a unique password for Opengates that you don't use on any other website or app. If another service is breached and you've reused your password, your Opengates account could be at risk.
  5. Use a password manager: Tools like 1Password, Bitwarden, LastPass, or the built-in password managers in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox can generate and store strong, unique passwords for you. You only need to remember one master password.
  6. Avoid personal information: Don't include your name, birthday, phone number, or other easily guessable information in your password.

How Strong Is Your Password?

Here's a rough guide to password strength based on length and complexity:

  • Weak (under 8 characters, common words): Can be cracked in seconds.
  • Fair (8–10 characters, mixed case and numbers): Can be cracked in hours to days.
  • Strong (12–16 characters, mixed case, numbers, and symbols): Can take years to crack.
  • Very strong (16+ characters, random or passphrase): Practically uncrackable with current technology.

What to Do If You Don't Receive the Reset Email

If you've requested a password reset but haven't received the email, don't panic. Here are the steps to troubleshoot:

1. Check Your Spam or Junk Folder

Password reset emails sometimes get caught by email filters. Look in your spam, junk, or promotions folder for an email from Opengates.

2. Wait a Few Minutes

Email delivery can sometimes be delayed, especially during peak hours. Wait at least 5–10 minutes before requesting another reset link.

3. Verify You're Using the Correct Email

Make sure you're entering the exact email address you used to create your Opengates account. Even a small typo (like gmail.con instead of gmail.com) will prevent the email from being sent.

4. Add Opengates to Your Contacts

Add the Opengates support email address to your contacts or safe senders list to prevent future emails from being filtered. Look for emails from no-reply@opengates.app or support@opengates.app.

If you still haven't received the email after checking the above, go back to the password reset page and request a new link. Each new request invalidates the previous link.

6. Check for Email Forwarding or Filters

If you have email forwarding rules or custom filters set up, the reset email might have been redirected or archived. Check your email settings.

7. Try a Different Email Provider

In rare cases, certain email providers may block or delay transactional emails. If possible, try updating your Opengates email to one from a major provider (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) and request the reset again.

8. Contact Support

If none of the above steps work, contact our support team. We can verify your identity through alternative means and help you regain access to your account. Be prepared to provide:

  • The email address associated with your account
  • Your display name on Opengates
  • Any recent activity on your account that you can recall
  • A government-issued ID (in some cases, for identity verification)

Security Considerations

After Resetting Your Password

Once you've reset your password, take these additional steps to secure your account:

  1. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): If you haven't already, set up 2FA to add an extra layer of security. See our Two-Factor Authentication guide.
  2. Review your active sessions: Check if there are any sessions you don't recognize and revoke them. See our Managing Sessions guide.
  3. Check your account settings: Make sure your email address, phone number, and other personal information haven't been changed without your knowledge.
  4. Review recent activity: Look at your recent messages, projects, and transactions for any unauthorized actions.

When to Reset Your Password Immediately

Reset your password right away if:

  • You suspect someone else knows your password.
  • You used your Opengates password on another site that has been breached.
  • You received a security alert from Opengates about suspicious login activity.
  • You logged in on a shared or public computer and forgot to log out.
  • You notice unfamiliar activity on your account, such as messages you didn't send or settings you didn't change.

Password Reset and 2FA

If you have two-factor authentication enabled and you reset your password:

  • You will still need to provide your 2FA code when logging in with your new password.
  • Your 2FA settings are not affected by a password reset.
  • If you've lost access to both your password and your authenticator app, you'll need to use your backup codes or contact support for account recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reset my password without access to my email?

Currently, password resets require access to the email address on your account. If you no longer have access to that email, contact our support team for alternative identity verification options.

How often should I change my password?

We recommend changing your password every 3–6 months, or immediately if you suspect it may have been compromised. If you use a strong, unique password and have 2FA enabled, frequent changes are less critical but still a good practice.

Will resetting my password log me out of all devices?

Yes. For security, resetting your password via the email link will sign you out of all active sessions. You'll need to log in again on each device with your new password.

Can I use the same password I used before?

No. Opengates prevents you from reusing your last 5 passwords. This ensures that you're always using a fresh, secure password.
