Creating Your Account
A step-by-step guide to signing up for Opengates, verifying your email, setting up your basic information, and completing the first-time setup wizard.
Creating Your Opengates Account
Before you can start using Opengates — whether you want to offer your skills as a freelancer, hire talented professionals as a client, or manage a team as an organization — you need to create an account. This guide walks you through the entire process from start to finish, explaining every step along the way.
The signup process is straightforward and should take about five to ten minutes. By the end, you will have a verified Opengates account ready to use.
Before You Begin
Here is what you will need to create your account:
- A valid email address — This will be your primary login credential and how Opengates communicates with you. Make sure you use an email address you check regularly and have access to, because you will need to verify it.
- A strong password — Your password should be at least 8 characters long and include a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using common passwords like "password123" or your name and birthdate.
- A few minutes of your time — The basic signup takes just a couple of minutes, but we recommend spending a few extra minutes on the initial profile setup to get the most out of the platform.
You can sign up from either the Opengates mobile app (available for iOS and Android) or the web version at the Opengates website. The process is nearly identical on both platforms.
Step 1: Navigate to the Signup Page
On the Web
Open your web browser and navigate to the Opengates website. On the homepage, you will see a prominent "Sign Up" or "Get Started" button. Click it to begin the registration process.
On the Mobile App
Download the Opengates app from the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Open the app and you will be greeted with the welcome screen. Tap "Sign Up" to start creating your account.
Already Have an Account?
If you already have an Opengates account, look for the "Log In" link instead. You do not need to create a new account — just sign in with your existing email and password.
Step 2: Enter Your Basic Information
The signup form asks for the following information:
Full Name
Enter your real full name (first name and last name). This is the name that will be displayed on your profile and seen by other users on the platform. If you are signing up as an individual (Freelancer or Client), use your personal name. If you are creating an Organization account, you will have the opportunity to set an organization name later.
Using your real name builds trust. Clients are more likely to hire freelancers whose profiles look authentic and professional, and freelancers are more likely to accept work from clients who use their real identities.
Email Address
Enter a valid email address. This will serve as:
- Your login credential (you will use this email to sign in every time)
- Your primary contact for account notifications, messages, and updates
- The address where your email verification link will be sent
Double-check that you have typed your email correctly. A typo here means you will not receive the verification email and will not be able to complete your account setup.
Password
Create a strong, unique password for your Opengates account. A good password:
- Is at least 8 characters long
- Includes uppercase and lowercase letters
- Contains at least one number
- Contains at least one special character (like !, @, #, $, %, etc.)
- Is not used on any other website or service
We strongly recommend using a password manager to generate and store a strong, unique password. This is one of the best things you can do to keep your account secure.
You will typically be asked to enter your password twice to confirm you typed it correctly.
Step 3: Choose Your Account Type
During signup, you will be asked to select your account type. Opengates offers three types:
- Freelancer — Choose this if you want to offer your skills and services, apply to tasks, and earn money on the platform.
- Client — Choose this if you want to hire freelancers, post tasks, and order services.
- Organization — Choose this if you want to create a group account for a company, nonprofit, government agency, or other group.
Do not worry too much about this choice right now — you can learn more about each account type in our Choosing Your Account Type guide. The important thing to know is that your account type determines what features and actions are available to you on the platform.
If you are not sure which to choose, think about your primary reason for joining Opengates. Are you here mainly to find work? Choose Freelancer. Are you here mainly to hire people? Choose Client.
Step 4: Agree to Terms and Conditions
Before your account can be created, you will need to review and agree to Opengates' Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. These documents explain:
- How the platform works and what rules all users must follow
- How your personal data is collected, stored, and used
- Your rights and responsibilities as a user
- The platform's policies on payments, disputes, and account management
We encourage you to read these documents carefully. By checking the agreement box and proceeding, you are confirming that you understand and accept these terms.
Step 5: Submit the Registration Form
Once you have filled in all the required fields and agreed to the terms, click the "Create Account" or "Sign Up" button to submit your registration. Opengates will process your information and create your account.
If there are any issues — such as an email address that is already registered, a password that does not meet the requirements, or a missing required field — you will see an error message explaining what needs to be fixed. Correct the issue and try again.
Step 6: Verify Your Email Address
After you submit the registration form, Opengates will send a verification email to the address you provided. This is an important security step that confirms you own the email address and that it is valid.
What to Expect
- Check your email inbox for a message from Opengates. The subject line will be something like "Verify Your Email Address" or "Confirm Your Opengates Account."
- Open the email and click the verification link inside it. This link will open in your browser and confirm your email address.
- Once verified, you will see a confirmation message on the Opengates website or app.
If You Do Not See the Email
Sometimes verification emails can take a few minutes to arrive. If you do not see it after five minutes:
- Check your spam or junk folder. Email providers sometimes filter automated messages into these folders.
- Check your promotions or updates tab. Some email clients (like Gmail) sort emails into tabs, and the verification email might end up in a secondary tab.
- Make sure you entered the correct email address. If you mistyped your email during registration, the verification email was sent to the wrong address. You may need to start the signup process again with the correct email.
- Request a new verification email. Opengates provides a "Resend Verification Email" option on the login page. Use this to send a fresh verification link.
- Contact support. If none of the above works, reach out to the Opengates support team for help.
Why Email Verification Matters
Email verification is not just a formality. It serves several important purposes:
- Security — It confirms that the person creating the account actually owns the email address, preventing unauthorized use of someone else's email.
- Communication — It ensures that important notifications, messages, and updates from the platform will actually reach you.
- Account recovery — If you ever forget your password or get locked out of your account, a verified email address is essential for the recovery process.
Step 7: First-Time Login
Once your email is verified, you can log in to Opengates for the first time. Go to the login page (on the web or in the app) and enter:
- Your email address
- Your password
Click "Log In" and you will be taken into the platform.
Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication
After your first login, we highly recommend enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) to add an extra layer of security to your account. With 2FA enabled, logging in requires both your password and a second verification step, such as:
- A one-time code from an authenticator app (like Google Authenticator or Authy)
- A passkey using your device's biometric sensor (fingerprint or face recognition) via WebAuthn
You can set up 2FA in your account security settings. While it is optional, it significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access to your account.
Step 8: The First-Time Setup Wizard
When you first log in, Opengates may guide you through a first-time setup wizard. This wizard helps you get your profile ready and understand the key features of the platform. The wizard experience may vary depending on your account type, but generally includes:
Profile Photo
Upload a profile photo. This is the image other users will see next to your name throughout the platform. For individual accounts (Freelancer or Client), use a clear, professional-looking headshot — your face should be visible and well-lit. For Organization accounts, your organization's logo works well.
Tips for a great profile photo:
- Use a high-resolution image (at least 400x400 pixels)
- Make sure your face is clearly visible (for individual accounts)
- Use good lighting — natural light works best
- Choose a simple, non-distracting background
- Smile and look approachable
Bio or Description
Write a short bio or description. This tells other users who you are and what you do. Keep it concise but informative:
- Freelancers: Describe your expertise, experience, and what makes you unique. Mention the types of projects you enjoy and what clients can expect when working with you.
- Clients: Describe your business or the types of projects you typically need help with. This helps freelancers understand whether they are a good fit.
- Organizations: Describe your organization's mission, what it does, and why it exists on the platform.
Location
Set your location. This helps with discoverability and can be important for projects that require working in specific time zones.
Language Preferences
Choose your preferred language for the platform interface. Opengates currently supports English, French, Swahili, and Arabic. You can change this at any time in your settings.

Troubleshooting Common Signup Issues
"This email is already registered"
If you see this error, it means an account already exists with that email address. Try logging in instead, or use the "Forgot Password" feature to reset your password if you do not remember it.
"Password does not meet requirements"
Make sure your password is at least 8 characters long and includes a mix of character types. Avoid common patterns and dictionary words.
