Account Recovery
Learn how to recover your Opengates account if you've lost access to your email, lost your 2FA device, or need help regaining access through identity verification and support.
Losing access to your Opengates account can be alarming, especially if you have active contracts, pending payments, or ongoing conversations. Whether you've lost access to your email, lost the device with your two-factor authentication (2FA) app, or simply can't get past the login screen, this guide will help you regain access to your account.
We understand how important account access is, and our recovery processes are designed to be thorough yet secure. We need to verify your identity before granting access to ensure that your account is protected from unauthorized access.
Understanding Account Recovery
Account recovery is the process of regaining access to your account when normal login methods aren't working. This is different from a simple password reset — account recovery is for situations where you've lost access to the email or authentication methods associated with your account.
When Do You Need Account Recovery?
You may need account recovery if:
- You no longer have access to the email address you registered with.
- You lost the device with your authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, etc.) and don't have backup codes.
- Your passkey device is lost, damaged, or no longer available.
- Your account has been compromised and the attacker changed your email or password.
- You've been locked out for security reasons and can't resolve it through normal channels.
- You forgot both your email and password and can't identify your account.
When You DON'T Need Account Recovery
For these simpler issues, recovery isn't necessary:
- Forgot your password but have email access: Use the "Forgot Password" link on the login page to reset it.
- 2FA code not working but you have backup codes: Use a backup code to log in, then reconfigure 2FA.
- Account temporarily locked: Wait for the lock to expire (usually 15-30 minutes) and try again.
See our Login Issues guide for solutions to these common problems.
Lost Access to Email
If you can no longer access the email address associated with your Opengates account, you won't be able to receive password reset links or security notifications. Here's what to do:
Step 1: Try to Recover Your Email First
Before going through Opengates account recovery, try to regain access to your email:
- Gmail: Visit accounts.google.com/signin/recovery and follow the prompts.
- Outlook/Hotmail: Visit account.live.com/password/reset.
- Yahoo: Visit login.yahoo.com and click "Forgot username" or "Forgot password."
- Other providers: Visit your email provider's website and look for account recovery options.
If you can recover your email, you can then use the normal Opengates password reset process to regain access to your account.
Step 2: Contact Opengates Support
If you can't recover your email, you'll need to contact our support team to initiate account recovery:
- Visit the Opengates Support page at support.opengates.app.
- Select Account Recovery as the issue type.
- Provide the following information:
- The email address associated with your account (even if you can't access it).
- Your username on Opengates.
- Your full name as it appears on your profile.
- The approximate date you created your account.
- Any recent activity you can remember (contracts, messages, payments).
- A new email address where we can reach you.
Step 3: Verify Your Identity
To protect your account, we'll need to verify your identity before making any changes. See the "Identity Verification for Recovery" section below for details on this process.
Step 4: Account Update
Once your identity is verified:
- Our support team will update the email address on your account to the new one you provided.
- You'll receive a confirmation email at your new address.
- You can then use the "Forgot Password" process to set a new password.
- Log in with your new email and password.
- Immediately update your security settings: Set up 2FA, create backup codes, and review your account for any unauthorized changes.
Recovering Account Without 2FA Device
If you set up two-factor authentication but lost access to your authenticator app or device, here's how to recover:
Option 1: Use Backup Codes
When you originally set up 2FA, Opengates provided you with a set of backup codes (also called recovery codes). These are one-time-use codes designed for exactly this situation.
- On the login page, enter your email and password as normal.
- When prompted for your 2FA code, look for a link that says "Use a backup code" or "Can't access your authenticator?".
- Enter one of your backup codes.
- You'll be logged in. Immediately go to Settings > Security > Two-Factor Authentication and:
- Disable the old 2FA method.
- Set up 2FA again on your new device.
- Generate and save new backup codes.
Option 2: Use an Alternative 2FA Method
If you set up multiple 2FA methods (e.g., authenticator app + SMS), try the alternative:
- On the 2FA prompt, look for "Try another method" or "Use SMS instead".
- Select the alternative method and complete verification.
- Once logged in, update your primary 2FA method to use your current device.
Option 3: Contact Support
If you don't have backup codes and no alternative 2FA methods are available:
- Contact our support team via the support page, a new email, or any available channel.
- Explain that you've lost access to your 2FA device and don't have backup codes.
- Provide identifying information:
- Your account email and username.
- Your full name.
- Recent account activity details.
- You'll need to go through the identity verification process (see below).
- Once verified, our support team will temporarily disable 2FA on your account so you can log in.
- After logging in, set up 2FA again immediately on your current device and save your new backup codes in a safe place.

Response Times
Account recovery requests are treated as high priority. Here are typical response times:
| Situation | Response Time |
|---|---|
| Account compromised (potential unauthorized access) | Within 2-4 hours |
| Lost 2FA device (no backup codes) | Within 24 hours |
| Lost email access | Within 24-48 hours |
| General account recovery | Within 1-3 business days |
Complex cases may take longer if additional verification steps are needed.
Identity Verification for Recovery
When you request account recovery, we need to verify that you are the legitimate owner of the account. This protects you from someone else gaining access to your account through social engineering.
Verification Methods
Depending on your situation and what information is available, we may use one or more of the following verification methods:
Document Verification
We may ask you to provide a government-issued photo ID to verify your identity. The name and photo on the ID should match your Opengates profile.
- Accepted documents: Passport, national ID card, driver's license.
- How to submit: Upload a clear photo of your ID through the secure submission link provided by our support team.
- Privacy: Your ID is used solely for verification purposes, handled securely, and deleted after the verification is complete.
Account Knowledge Verification
We may ask you questions that only the true account owner would know:
- What payment method did you use for your last transaction?
- What is the title of your most recent contract?
- What was the name of the last person you messaged?
- What skills are listed on your profile?
- What is your profile bio?
Email/Phone Verification
If you have access to a previously associated email or phone number:
- We may send a verification code to that email or phone.
- You'll need to provide the code to prove access.
Video Verification
In some cases, we may request a short video call or a recorded video where you:
- Show your face (to match your profile photo or ID).
- Hold up your ID document.
- State your name and account details.
This is typically reserved for high-value accounts or complex recovery situations.
What Happens After Verification
Once your identity is verified:
- Our team will grant you access through one of these methods:
- Updating your email address to a new one you control.
- Temporarily disabling 2FA so you can log in with your password.
- Sending a password reset link to your new email.
- You'll receive instructions on how to log in.
- After logging in, you should immediately:
- Change your password.
- Update your 2FA settings.
- Review your account for any unauthorized changes (profile info, bank details, active contracts).
- Save your new backup codes securely.
- Update your email address if needed.
Preventing Future Account Loss
To avoid going through account recovery in the future, take these preventive steps:
Save Your Backup Codes
When you set up 2FA, Opengates provides backup codes. Save these codes in a safe place — not on the device with your authenticator app (since losing that device is the scenario you're preparing for). Good places to store backup codes:
- A password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, LastPass).
- A printed copy stored in a secure physical location (safe, lockbox).
- An encrypted file on a separate device or cloud storage.
Set Up Multiple 2FA Methods
Don't rely on a single 2FA method. Set up at least two:
- Authenticator app + SMS.
- Authenticator app + passkey.
- Passkey + backup codes.
Keep Your Recovery Email Updated
If Opengates offers a recovery email option, set it up with a secondary email address that you control. This gives you an alternative way to verify your identity.
Use a Password Manager
A password manager stores your passwords securely, so you don't have to remember them. This prevents the most common cause of login issues — forgotten passwords.
Keep Your Contact Information Current
Make sure your email address, phone number, and other contact information on your Opengates account are always up to date. This ensures you can receive security notifications and recovery communications.
Enable Login Notifications
Turn on notifications for new logins so you're alerted whenever someone (including you) logs into your account from a new device or location. This helps you catch unauthorized access early.
